Explanation about the Cheesemarket is given
The Cheesemarket can be found at the Jan van Nieuwenhuizensquare, the old cheesemarket of Edam. The morning markets start at 10.30 hour till 12.30 hour while the evening market starts at 21.00 hour till 23.00 hour. The evening markets starts with an broad program before starting the cheesemarket. The fleemarket starts at 16.00 hour. The Cheesemarket Edam Foundation is a non-commercial and non professional organisation with more then ninety volunteers.
Cheese
Cheese is made of milk (the milk just becomes clotted with of course some other matters in it), mostly the milk of a cow. But in Holland you can also see at farms a board on which is standing „Goat cheese for sale“. A well known cheesemarkets are the cheesemarkets in Alkmaar and Gouda.
"Gouda," "Edam," and "Leiden" cheese are among the most prominent of all Dutch cheeses. More than 50% of the total cheese production consists of Gouda cheese. Edam cheese is the only cheese in the world to hold a perfectly round shape and is the second most important product in the variety of Dutch cheeses representing 27% of the total Dutch cheese production. Leiden cheese distinguishes itself from the others by the addition of cumin seeds.
Cheese markets
In the olden days, the farmer would take his cheese once a week to a nearby cheese market looking for a bidder. Today, the cheese markets in Gouda and Alkmaar (open during the summer months) still feature the old rituals and traditions of the cheese trading process.
The „Waag“ (weigh house) in Gouda is one of many beautiful monuments in town and dates from 1668. During the summer, cheese is weighed here every Thursday morning in an attractive ceremony drawing many tourists. Anyone interested or hungry can also take the opportunity to taste some authentic Gouda cheese.
The mills at Kinderdijk
Kinderdijk is much wonderful! The windmill landscape is unique in the world and these nineteen magnificent mills are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. People live there and has home animals. I think, they are very satisfied here.
